Ref#173:
Daniel Dodd baptised 15 Oct 1615 Wixoe,, Suffolk England recorded as son
of Thomas Dodd. Birdbrook parish about 2 miles from Wixoe parish has
recorded the death and burial of Thomas Dodd 19 Sept 1649 buried in
Birdbrook Churchyard on 20 Sept 1649. His wife named in his will as
Katherine. Children named in will Daniel, Thomas, Stephen and Samuel,
and Susanna wife of Henry Dunmow. No daughter named Rebecca mentioned, I
will do a bit more digging in my files to see if Daniel Sr. did have a
sister named Rebecca that marr. Samuel Riggs and let you know about that
later.

Some evidence suggests that he may have been born in Essex or Suffolk,
England. Among a number of "children of the Branford Church" baptized at
New Haven in June, 1651, are the names of Mercy, Hannah, and Daniel Dod.
Mercy is called Mary in the record of Rev. Stephen Dodd. Hannah is
omitted from Rev. Stephen's list of the children of Daniel Dod, but the
will of Stephen Dod of Guilford mentions his sister "Anna" Fowler. In
the same will Stephen mentions a cousin Mary Wheeler.

Daniel Dod died between sowing time 1665 and the harvest of 1666 as an
appraisal of his personal property included "the wheat on the ground".
The children, left orphans at his death, all removed to Newark, New
Jersey, except Anna and Stephen, who lived in Guilford. Richard Lawrence
and Lawrence Ward were appointed guardians. Lieut. Swayne, John Wilford,
and John Ward appraised the estate which amounted to £146 17s 4d. At
that time this was an amount sufficient to give the children a fair start
in life in a country where land could be bought for very little money.

See Genealogies of the Male Descendants of Daniel Dod, of Branford,
Conn., 1864, by Bethuel Dodd and John Burnet, particularly Part I
concerning Daniel Dod of Branford. The New England Historic &
Genealogical Society's lending library in Boston had a copy available ca
1993.

About 1 of every 1500 persons in England have the name Dodd, Dodd being
the more common spelling there. In America there are fewer of the name
and the more common spelling here was once Dod but now Dodd. Early
English records suggest the name probably originated near the border of
Wales, in Shropshire and Cheshire. The name is provided in Burkes
Heraldry. We don't know the exact origin of Daniel Dod in England. He
first appears in Branford, Connecticut records about 1646. A likely
conjecture is that he was one of the twenty thousand emigrants who poured
into Massachusetts, chiefly Boston, between the years 1630 and 1640.

Other children sometimes attributed to him are John and Dorcas Dod. His
children Daniel, Stephen, John, and Dorcas are said to have established
homes on various tracts of the Watsesson grant, in the valley of the
Second River. However, this is probably incorrect. It was Daniel's son
Daniel who had children John and Dorcas.
