not listed in the will.

Excerpt from Watkins' Noble Co History, page 357-8:

Mathew Ball, one of the prominent prioneers of Center Township, was a
native of Wales {wrong}, where he was born in 1745. He came to this
country {meaning Ohio} shortly after the Revolutionary War; he first
settled in Allegany County, MD., where he followed tanning and milling;
he was successful in business, and accumulated what at the time was
thought to be a competency. With the desire no doubt of betting the
condition of his family he came to Noble County, and in 1818 entered 160
acres of land near where is now the village of Sarahsville. On this farm
he lived until his decease which occurred Dec 27, 1821; he reared a
family of nine children - Mathew, Jonas, John, Daniel, Lydia (Gilpin),
Mary (Riddle), Susan (Vorhies), Ann and Julia. Jonas was born in
Maryland in 1791, and came to the new country with the family. He
married Miss Amy Archer, and was the first settler on the farm now owned
by Mr Clay young. He was a typical pioneer in the fullest sense of the
term, strong, robust and resolute, and possessed of unlimited confidence
in his own resources and his ability to conquer success under such
adverse circumstances. He had a full share of pioneer experiences, a
narration of which would sound to the present generation more like
fiction than fact. He was obliged to market the produce of the farm in
Marietta, a distance of nearly fifty miles over roads that at this time
would be thought to be impassable; on occasion he tool a load of port to
Marietta, which he sold for $1.50 per hundred, but despite the obstacles
which would have disheartened one less courageous, he was successful in
life and at one time owned over 1,200 acres of land. But few men did
more than he in the development of the county, and the name of Jonas Ball
will alwas be accorded a prominent place among the pioneers of Noble
County. He died Oct 9, 1875, aged eighty three years; his wife died in
1865, aged sixty three. He had a family of twelve children, four boys
and eight girls. James was born in Center Dec 19, 1819; his youth was
passed on the farm of his father, sharing the hardships of a pioneer
family; his recollection of the early days is vivid; he recalls many
incidents that took place in his boyhood that illustrate pioneer life in
Center. The following is related to show what the pioneers were
compelled to endure and something of the early life of our subject. In
1835, just before harvest, the family got out of wheat, and they were
obliged to cut the ripe spots; the sheaves after being sufficiently dried
were threshed with flails, cleaned with a sheet and riddle. On this
occasion the wheat was boiled in a tea kettle with a little maple sugar
to render it more palatable. On this unwholesome diet they subsisted for
two days. Many other experiences might be given, but this will suffice
as an illustration. Like his father, he began life upon a new farm, and
is entitled to a prominent place among the pioneer farmers of the
county. He married Miss Anna Salladay in 1844. She was born in Buffalo
Township in 1824. They reared a family of six children -- Emily
(Russell), Israel, Martha (Downey), Angeline (Cox), Jane (Newton) and
Annie. ** Note: Although some county history accounts reflect Mathew
Ball as a native of Wales, he is a native of New Jersey. **

Page 483 reflects the following names as voters for an election for
township officers in Noble Township, Morgan County, on April 3, 1820:
Jonas Ball, Daniel Ball.
Page 338 Union Township, Monroe County reflects:
Jonas Ball, section 18, 166 acres, $227
Matthew Ball, section 5, 40 acres $46
Daniel Ball, section 7, 127 acres $173
Daniel Ball, section 5, 40 acres $45

The early settlers in the immediate vacinity of Sarahsville, OH were:
Ephraim Bates, John Jones, Isaac Bates, and Daniel Bates, all prior to
1820. Jonas Ball, from Alleghany County, MD., settled in 1818 west of
Sarahsville on the farm adjoining that on which his son, James Ball, now
lives. Jonas Ball was a soldier in the War of 1812. James Ball, an
ex-county commissioner and a prominent citizen, has lived all his life in
the township, and has a vivid recollection of the pioneer scenes among
which he was reared. He recalls the time when the country was so full of
wolves that sheep had to be penned up securely every night, or some of
the flock was almost sure to be missing in the morning.

Submitted by Mary Estelene Riddle-Lapinski:
Matthew Ball, my gr-gr-gr-grandfather, was born in Hanaover, NJ in 1745,
s-o Caleb Ball II, s-o Caleb Ball I, s-o Edward Ball. He married Mary
Osborn Hathaway, b 1735, widow of Abel Hathaway. Mary died due to a
small pox epidemic in 1777. She and Matthew had three children. He
married again to Ruth, whose maiden name eludes all of her researchers.
Matthew was a tanner and miller in Allegany County, MD. (He was
successful in business, and accumulated what at that time was thought to
be a compentency - (From History of Center Twp, Noble Co. Ohio, pg 357).
Thinking he might even better the condition of his family he moved, with
his wife and children to Monroe Co. in 1818. He entered into 160 acres of
land 22 Aug 1816. He and Ruth were the parents of nine children who were
the pioneers of their generation in Monroe Co.; up until 1850 when the
section they lived in became part of Noble Co. There children were: (1)
Mathew Jr, born ca 1782 and died 16 FEB 1833, who married Elizabeth Athey
3 Feb 1802, they were the parents of 10 children. (2) Lydia born ca 1784,
died Marietta, OH. Married Elias Gilpin 1 DEC 1801. (3) Daniel Ball born
ca 1785 died 1849 married first Mary? and second Airy Larimore. There
were no children. (4) Mary Ball born 1786 died 8 Apr 1857 who married
Moses Ayers Riddle. There were the parents of eleven children. (5) Julia
Ball born ca 1790 married Philip Myers 12 May 1812. They had a large
family. (6) Jonas Ball born 1791 died 9 Oct 1875 married Amy Archer 15
Sept 1818. They may have had thirteen or fourteen children. (7) Susannah
Ball born ca 1792 married Ephraim Voorhies 28 July 1817. (8) Anna Ball
born ca 1794 never married. (9) John born ca 1808 died in IA in 1834,
probably married a Delilah?. They had not children.

Matthew Ball and Mary Osborn Hathaway had three children. Eunice who
married Anthony Pitzer. James born 7 Dec 1771, no other record, and Sarah
born 8 May 1774 married Richard Jacobs. He may have been her second
husband as George Templeton was listed as husband in History of First
Presbyterian Church, Morristown, NJ, married 18 Dec 1802.

Matthew and his second wife, my ggggrandmother Ruth had four children who
died young. John, Aaron, Susan drowned in MD in 1810 and Caleb born 1788
and died at the age of 32 in MD. He had never married. Altogether my
grandfather was the father of sixteen children. Quite a record in
itself. Four generations later his descendants were still carrying his
name - as in Matthew Ball Riddle. Red hair was still cropping up in his
3rd great and 4th great grandchildren. I was told as a child that was a
Ball trait.

I could not have written this without the help of Lois Blake, LTC Blaine
Ball, Leona Ball Spice and Joseph P. Skukanec. If I have erred in any of
this you descendants be sure to let me know.
