In the 1840 census, Page 280, shows a James E. Ball living in Plymouth
Notes
Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania (near Scranton) with one child
under 6 (possibly James E.) and 2 children from 5 to 11 (Could be Charles
M. and John T.), himself in the 30 to 40 age category. Females: one
under six (Sarah) and Harriet (mother) from 30 to 40 age. This totals
out to six and gels with the 1850 census which shows them living in
Dyberry Township, Wayne County, PA near Honesdale as a farmer (Page 190,
Wayne Cy, Township of Dyberry). Before the 1840 census it appears that
the family was living in Essex County, New Jersey. Copies of the census
for 1840, 1850, and 1860 show his name abbreviated as Jas E. Ball of Jos
E. Ball. I have checked the printed books on this and they show his name
as James E. twice and Joseph E. once. However, the printed records from
Dyberry Township show him in 1850 and 1860 as James E. so we will record
him as James E. instead of Joseph E.
Ref#111:
Info shows a son named George born after Sarah Burnet but no other list
shows this son.
