Notes on Hanover, NJ, Churchyards

Jesse Laird Bryant had written:

1. Where is Hanover ChurchYard?
2. Can I locate it through the Web? I've tried so many sites without luck!
3. Do you have an address for this Church?

Edward Ball group member Bev Crifasi replied:

I think you are looking for an old Presbyterian church cemetery- there are two Presbyterian Churches in East Hanover, which is a part of Hanover Township.

First Presbyterian Church
(Tel: 973-887-0298)
14 Hanover Rd.
E. Hanover, NJ 07936

Kitchell Memorial Presbyterian Church
(Tel: 973-887-6939)
469 Ridgedale Ave.
E. Hanover, NJ 07936

Neither church has an active cemetery, but they could have old burying grounds on their properties. I have seen an old cemetery on Route 10, a highway that runs through Hanover/East Hanover- I didn't note which church is nearby (although Ridgedale Ave. is too far for it to be associated with the Kitchell church) Maybe it's not associated with either of these churches and it is yet another cemetery. Next time I'm by there I'll pay more attention.

There are two large, active cemeteries in East Hanover. I don't think that either one is what you want, but I'm including them for completeness:

Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery
(Tel: 973-887-0286)
225 Ridgedale Ave.
E. Hanover, NJ 07936

Restland Memorial Park
(Tel: 973-887-2050)
77 DeForest Ave.
E. Hanover, NJ 07936

Edward Ball group member Joanne Rabun replied:

Hidden away in The Gene Pool is a photo of the Hanover Church that was taken by our good cousin, Blaine Ball. On the page with the photos, there is a list of Ball family ancestors who are buried there.

Edward Ball group member Edward H. Burnet replied:

I surmise your real goal is to obtain info about the Osborne family. Given this, you should be contacting Morris County libraries rather than the Church..

First is the:

East Hanover Township Library
Ridgedale Ave.
Hanover, NJ 07936
201/428-3075

They have a book there titled "Hanover Graveyard." I copied about a dozen pages from it including the names Baldwin, Ball, Camp, Halsey, and Ward.

There is also a book titled "Church Members, Marriages and Baptisms, at Hanover, Morris County, N.J., During the Pastorate of Rev. Jacob Green and to the Settlement of Rev. Aaron Condit, 1746--1796". Pages I copied from this include the names Ball, Burnet, Halsey, Riggs, Camp, Ward, et al. This is in chronological order. I found this book at the Jersey City Library, but I would expect it to also be on the shelves at the Morristown and Morris County libraries.

There is a Whippany Grave Yard on Route 10 in Whippany where Matthias Burnet and his family are buried. The Morristown Library has various documents of tombstone inscriptions for this cemetery and I have pages from a book titled "Whippany Grave Yard."

One of the best sources for genealogy information is:

The Joint Free Public Library of Morristown
1 Miller Road
Morristown, NJ 07960
201/538-6161

Another good source:

Morris County Library
30 East Hanover Ave.
Whippany, NJ 07981
201/285-6930

These three libraries (East Hanover, Morristown, and Morris County) have the sources you need. Call, or better yet, write them.

Edward Ball group member Stephen B. McNally replied:

I have a helpful book entitled "NJ Graveyard and Gravestone Inscriptions Locators Morris County" by Edward J. Raser published in 1994 by the Genealogical Society of NJ, New Brunswick. It is hard cover and was purchased for $17.50 from:

GSNJ
c/o Joseph R. Klett, Chairman
7 Mercer St
Hopwell, NJ 08525

Five cemeteries are listed in East Hanover Township, one being the Hanover Presbyterian Churchyard--it states among other things that age is 1750 to date, active use, excessive wear, located on the north side of Mt. Pleasant Ave, opposite the intersection of Hanover Road; and more important that this is the graveyard referrred to in the 1894 Wheeler and Halsey book "Inscriptions on the Tomb Stones and Monuments in the Grave Yards at Whippany and Hanover...".

It also states that there is a manuscript "in process" of the gravestone inscriptions copied by the Society in 1965 and checked against Wheeler and Halsey. One other cemetery called the "Hanover Cemetery" is located on the east side of Hanover Road, 0.3 mile south of Mt. Pleasant Avenue with age 1840 to date, active status, no manuscript discovered of inscriptions.

Among the cemeteries of Hanover Township is the Whippany Presbyterian Churchyard, 1732-1900s, active status which is referred to in the Wheeler and Halsey book also.

This book should be a must for anyone researching the Morris County area.

Then Jesse Laird Bryant wrote:

Thanks to all,

I would like to thank each one of you for the information that you sent me. The church addresses, library addresses, books to order or research, photo of Hanover Church and the URL sites to explore have and will be very helpful. Your dedication to the research of the "Descendants of Edward Ball" and the information put forth by everyone is astounding. Again thank you all very much!
