Web Site: The Genealogy of the Garrigues Family
Site Info: A scholarly study of the genealogy of this huguenot family
Date: Saturday, October 27, 2001
Comments:
I really enjoy the look and facility of your site. However, I would like to gently point out that there are a number of problems with the information as it pertains to the Garrigues family. These problems are common in the information on this family and I don't mean to single you out in any way.
Specifically, there is no documented evidence to support the assertion that Jean Garrigues and Marie de Franchemont were the parents of Matthieu (the immigrant) Garrigues nor is there any evidence connecting the other ancestors La Garrigues and Arnaud Henri. This has been written repeatedly since Edmund Garrigues began the research in earnest a few decades ago. The only statement found to date on this (Jean and Marie connection) is a mere supposition from La France Protestante which claims that Matthieu "may have been" a son of Jean and Marie. However, no evidence has been uncovered which even remotely withstands the genealogical burden of proof.
As for the death date for Jean Garrigues stated as "after 1710 in Holland," this is most probably incorrect. I base this on civil records in Perigord which contain an August 1685 entry for Marie de Franchemont, "widow of Jean Garrigues, who denounced her "protestant heresies." Jean was said to have been a "Judge in Siorac," Perigord. This documentation means that Jean was dead prior to any exodus to The Hague. Marie would have done what she did in an attempt to retain any of Jean's remaining estate. Of course we have no proof that they were the parents of our ancestors anyway but it merits further research. After all, we don't "know" that they weren't either. I might suggest a thorough research of the Catholic registers in and around Siorac in Perigord. Many protestant families of the era were forced to record the births and baptisms of their children in the Catholic registers to establish a legal record for probate purposes.
More pertinent are the errors and additions on dates for Matthieu & Susanne (née Rochet) Garrigues and their first two children: Marguerite Jeanne and François Phillipe. François was born and baptised on October 29, 1704 in Rotterdam as per records of the Walloon (French Reformed) Church in Rotterdam. Write me if you'd like copies. Marguerite was baptised on January 1, 1702/3. She may very well have been born that day as well but we don't know for certain. Another resource, a multi-volume compilation called "Carribbeana" shows a census entry for Matthieu Garrigues in 1708 on the Island of St. Kitts. He is enumerated with his wife Susanne and their son François Phillipe. Marguerite is conspicuously absent and probably indicates that she died prior to their departure from Holland or enroute to the Antilles.
Susanne (as it is most often spelled in Walloon records) was born Abt. 1678 in France. This is based on her death and burial entry in the records of Christ Church in Philadelphia. The cemetery register records the inscription on Susannah Garrigues's headstone as the following: "In Memory of Susannah Garrigues who departed this life the 30th day of Septr 1746 Aged 67 years." This supports a date of birth sometime about 1678. The record of her marriage in The Hague indicates that she was in fact born in France. I have verified and photgraphed this tombstone inscription on the original stone during numerous visits to the cemetery . As late as June 2001 the original inscription was discernable and matches that in the church record.
Again, I really like your page and I send these corrections/additions only in the spirit of genealogical collaboration. If you'd like copies of any of the sources I've mentioned let me know and we'll coordinate to send them to you. I'd also really like to talk to you more about the software or programs you have used to develop this page. I may like to use the same format for my own if possible.
Thanks again and keep up the great work.

After years of following this web site I am still amazed
by the enormity of my existence. As a decendent of so
many notable and adverturous souls I constantly question their desire to migrate west during the early days of American expansion.
Amzie Lewis Ball, his son John and wife Nancy, granddaughter Emmy and husband Marvin Hubbard embarked on journeys without securities or guarantees of survival even success. From Indiana to Iowa and on to Oregon. I can only speculate that their motive was the promise of something better or perhaps a desire to move away from an imposing government. They were truly touched by a spirit that is hard define or perhaps find anymore. I hope this spirit is still alive in all of the decendants of Edward Ball.
I periodically tend to the grave site of John and Nancy Ball. It is beautiful little setting in one of Oregon's early pioneer cemeteries. If anyone would like a picture I be happy to send a copy to them.
A note of interest: Marvin and Emmy(Ball) and my grandfather Ernest Victor Hubbard are buried on a hillside overlooking the old Hubbard farmsite. The setting is peaceful but urban sprawl has overtaken the once beautiful area.
Bless you all

I came upon this file accidently. Imagine my surprise when up
popped my greatgrandmother, Eunice Wickware Robottom. And, as usual, I appear only as there may have been another daughter. Indeed there was, myself, Eunice Lynne Wickware Robottom Jacques. I do wonder how the entries are selected. I am indeed a member of the DAR, Virginia Dare chapter. My father was James Robottom. I am looking for the e-mail address of my distant relative, Steven ?, who is a gentleman I met over the Internet. Through a long chain of this and that of no interest, I lost his address when my elderly computer died of gross anemia.

Mary Ball (my grandmothers great grandmother)married Abner Brown. She was decendant of Cornelius Ball (Saratoga County NY, descendant of Edward Ball (NJ), descendent of Alling (or Allen Ball) New England. At a reunion recently with my parents (91) and was given a folder of information that described the family descendants from the ball side. Had heard these stories from my Anut IDA (actually my grandmothers sister) about 50 years ago (I'm 61 now). All of a sudden I now have the ddetails.. Have lots of intrest in the family trees.. on my wifes side there is Budd from Conneticut... Interesting enough Sarah Budd (from Conn) married Cornelius Ball. Could mean there is Budd blood on both sides of my childrens roots.
Anyway would be interested in talking, emailing working with others on this... (have 38 years experience with computers)...

Looking for data on my gr. grandparents - BEN GIBBS and LIZZIE McNAIR. They had a daughter, Hettie, whom I am named after. Hettie was born on July 15, 1893 in Onslow Co., N. Carolina. Ben was either a slave himself, but certainly a direct descendent of a slave. In reading Mr. Balls book, there are Gibbs mentioned (S. Carolina). Perhaps my ancestors originated in S. Carolina and migrated up to N. Carolina.
There is a Maum HETTY mentioned in "Slaves in the Family" (Edward Ball) p. 343. She was said to be the (Limerick) plantation's black matriarch.
On p. 344 -- mention of a gardner, called "DADDY BEN".

How exciting to find this website! I have been trying to link my Hayden B. Edwards to his father, John Edwards, for 12 years. Maybe this is my opening! He was in IN in 1834 with Rev. Moses and David Edwards. He helped Moses establish a Baptist church in New Marion, Ripley Co., IN. He lived in Henry Co., KY prior to that and married Abigail Fitzgerald. Marriage records there give his father's name as John Edwards. Hayden was born in 1811, early records say NY, later records say KY. If this looks in the least familiar to anyone, I'd sure love to hear from you.

My son put his name in just for the fun of it and got this page. I was so excited I had to see it myself. This is great. It is my mother's side of the family. We also have my father's side of the famil (George W. Hughes) I understand someone has the Guth family history as well. I understand that somewhere along the line that Rose M. Perry (aka Rose M. Hughes, my mom) was related to George Washington. My father's great-grandmother was a cousin to General E. Lee. I see now that our family really dates back on both sides to the beginning of the country. Thank you for your hard work in research.

Now, Downing was my mother's true surname, but was adopted by her step father who's last name was Kovac and later became Farris and then last Linda Lee Potts. I seem to have run into an impass after my g.g.g. grandparents Frank Elsworth Fuller and Goldie Mae Edwards. The first record of a family member in New Jersey is Joost Duryee III who was born in New Jersey in 1709. He married Antje Terhune in 1730, and they settled in Six-mile Run, New Jersey. Their son, Joost IV, died in Montgomery Twp., New Jersey. He was married to Magdalena Bavids, daughter of William Bavids. Their son, Frederick Duryee, was born in Blawenburg, New Jersey 8 Apr 1755. He married Charity Sutphen. Frederick and Charity later moved to Schenectady, New York.
I would like to know if you have any more info on these individuals. I only have tidbits on them myself. My wife is currently working on a fiction-based-on-fact book based on my Duryee family line starting with the first people located in France. If you have any information that could assist me in my research, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

My Grand Father was born in Hamburg Germany on April 16,1887. He had a sister named Agusta. I do not know his mothers name as she died. And am not quite sure of the fathers name. I was told it was: Wilhelm Ballbach, but he was supposed to have dropped the bach when he want to live in Costa Rico with his 2nd wife. All I know about her is she was Spanish. My Grand Father was on a schooling ship until his father died. The he was left off at some port. When he finally made it home he was told to go as his father was dead. I know he went to New York and then lived with some people in New Jersey. He later moved to Phila. met & married Emilie Julia Fachet on Oct. 19, 1914. They resided in Milmont Park, PA. My Grand Mother was born in
Ortsplan Von Konigsau in Oct. 1891 she had 2 brothers Adam & Leon who came to USA with her. Her Mother & sister died in Austria. I have no info on them.
If you are related or think you are related I would like to hear from you.

I saw your Tickfer relatives and became interested in seeing if I could contact one of them. I have not found many Tickfer's from Indiana, much less a connection to the ones in my family line! I have an Anna Maria Tickfer, b. November 20, 1832 in Usch or Usht, Germany. Her father was noted to be John Tickfer, but no information given. She married Lorentz Radke, and eventually came to US and settled in Logansport, Indiana with her husban and many children until she died in 1900. I wanted to share my information in case someone stumbles upon a connection. I love your website, and you have done a wonderful job in presenting your family tree!

I've been trying to find a link between the New Jersey Van Giesons and the large Van Gieson family out here in Hawaii. My g-grandfather John Henry Van Gieson arrived on Maui in 1869. He supposedly came from Darmstadt. (One document said he was German by birth / American by adoption!)

Hi,
I have some information that I thought you might like.
I have information on Phebe Wade and John Halstead. John Halstead (b. 1754-1841) married Phebe Wade daughter of David Wade and Phebe Ball, New Jersey Planters. John and Phebe had ten children. They are as follows: Clarissa, Robert, Noah, David Wade, Sarah, Mary, Robert Wade, Nancy, Julia and Hanna(Frances). The fifth child Sarah married Luther Hopping. (They are my great great great grandparents.)
Luther along with Sarah's father John Halstead lived in Miamitown, Ohio. John Halstead came to Cincnnati, Ohio after the death of his first wife Phebe 1759-1817 and later married Ann Marsh on January 7, 1823. The 1819 city directory shows him to be a Tailor. He also is the only Revolutionary veteran proven to be buried in the Miamitown Cemetery. He is buried with his daughter Sarah and son-inlaw Luther. He is also a direct descented of King Edward I of England thru Robert La Bruen and Hannah Bruen of Stapleton, England.
Luther and Sarah had a daughter Phebe Looker Hopping who married a William Johnson. They had a son William H. Johnson who was a doctor in Miamitown and Harrison 1869-1886. He married Elizabeth Bennett and they had four children Mable b.1870, Harry b.1874, John and Joseph b. 1876. Mable married Hugh Max and Harry married Viva Perkin in 1915. They lived in Portland Maine. Harry and Viva had a son Richard W. Johnson,b 1916 , d 1984 my father.
I hope this information will be of some help to you.
You have a very interesting sight.
