DUTCH NOMENCLATURE
&
DUTCH BAPTISMAL NAMES AND THEIR EQUIVALENTS IN ENGLISH.

[From Munsell's "Annals of Albany;" with emendations and additions.]

[ NOMENCLATURE ]

It may not be amiss to add a word upon the subject of Dutch surnames, for the benefit of those whose attention has not been directedto the matter, inasmuch as some of the names on the earliest records of Hackensack do not appear under the surnames which the families now bear. Family names were not common among the early Dutch immigrants.
Persons of the same baptismal names were distinguished from each other in various ways; sometimes by their trade, as Jan Kuyper that is, John the cooper; Jan Metzlaer that is, John the mason, etc. Sometimes by their place of birth or residence; for example: Jan Van Wyck that is, John from Wyck; Jan Vandeventer that is, John from Deventer etc. At other times by affixing the father's baptismal name, with the addition of s, se, sen, etc., indicating the relationship. For example: Jan Pieters, or Pictersen that is, John, the son of Peter; Jan Jansen, or Jan Hanse, etc. that is, John, the son of John, etc.
It will readily be seen how difficult is the task of tracing the genealogy of these early settlers, when a family may have had a different surname from that of its immediately preceding generation.
Toward the end of the seventeenth century, most of the settlers had assumed family names, and thereafter, those who had hither to been known as Gerritsens, Albertsens, etc., were known as Blauvelts, Terhunes, etc. The first name that appears on the roll of members at Hackensack is Hendrick Jorese, and his wife, Claesie Cornelese, who was Henry, son of George, one of the ancestors of the Brinkerhoff family, his wife being the daughter of Cornelius, one of the Bogert family.
We append, for the purpose of identification, the present family names of some of those who appear in the early records of Hackensack, only under their patronymics
