- 6. [NJ14] Old Burial Grounds of New Jersey: A Guide, Sarapin. Not only does the author describe New Jersey burial grounds, she also introduces you to the history and lore of old graveyards, shows you how to read epitaphs, how to date gravestones by style, how to restore an abandoned graveyard, and how to find the stories of the people buried there. (1994), 224 pp., softbound, $14.95.
I have this one too, but was a little disappointed with it. For example, there is an entry for the Old First Church Cemetery that is listed as being "on Broad near Market Street, downtown Newark." The author then advises, "Park on Edison Place to view this cemetery dating from 1719. The church was first a Puritan congregation, then a Presbyterian one, and contains graves from the 1700s of Newark's earliest citizens." Too bad for you if you follow her advice, because the graves were moved almost a hundred years ago to (I think) Fairmont Cemetery. There is a memorial garden at Old First, but unless you go when the building is open you can't get access to it from the street. This book doesn't even mention the Old Burying Ground in Caldwell that I pass every day. Makes me skeptical about the scholarship of the rest of the book, but as this is a topic about which I am quite ignorant I am trying to glean something from it.

- "Does the Joint Free Public Library of Morristown and Morris Township loan out materials to other libraries?"
Generally, yes, the Library does participate in an inter-library loan program. However, our local history department is a non-circulating collection, and we will only lend materials if we have them in book form and on microfilm. Requests should be made through your local library. We are happy to send photocopies of material (up to 20 pages at 20c per page, plus postage) and we will also do up to an hour's research in response to a written query. Just send a letter to the Local History Dept. at 1 Miller Rd., Morristown, NJ 07960 - be as specific as possible and let us know sources you have already used. We would be delighted to have any research notes you might have for our collection. If you need more detailed research doing, we also have a list of professional genealogists who work for a fee - we would be happy to send it to you. - The Frank C. Ball Collection. Letter from the BALL STATE UNIVERSITY dated 1 October 1990 - written to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Scukanec:
"We recently transferred the Frank C. Ball Collection, containing extensive Ball family genealogy Holdings, to the Minnetrista Cultural Center. This was at the request of the Ball family. The Minnetrista Cultural Center, as you may know, is a new facility located in Muncie, which holds the other Ball family and corporate records. My primary reason for writing is to ask if you would mind if we likewise transfer the Ball materials which you have donated to our area. The Center is interested in having them, as they complement the Frank C. Ball Collection so nicely and would aid researchers looking into the various Ball family lines. We plan to refer most Ball family research to the Center since they now possess all of the primary resource material, so we are most agreeable to such a transfer." Letter was signed by David C. HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS OF NEW JERSEY: PAST AND PRESENT CONTAINING A GENERAL COLLECTION OF THE MOST INTERESTING FACTS, TRADITIONS, BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES, ANECDOTES, ETC. John W. Barber & Henry Howe. If you are in need of a detailed history of New Jersey and New Jersey towns from the colonial period to the Civil War, look no further. Originally published in 1844 and revised in 1852 and 1868, Historical Collections of New Jersey is an excellent source on the founding and founders of the Garden State. In the style of 19th-century histories, the work begins with an outline history of the state emphasizing the early Dutch and Swedish presence, the British proprietors Berkeley and Carteret, colonial statutes, commerce, contact with the Indian population, New Jersey in the colonial wars and the Revolution, and so on. The bulk of the volume is devoted to historical sketches of no fewer than 350 towns scattered around the state. Arranged by county and thereunder alphabetically, the town sketches, which range in size from a paragraph or two to five-or-ten pages, describe the town's location, natural features, principal industries, churches and schools, and, in many instances, noteworthy historical episodes, and particularly the town's role in the American Revolution. The sketches are further embellished by 120 engravings drawn by the authors during their research, as well as by correspondence, newspaper articles, travellers' accounts, and other original documents lending authenticity to the whole affair. Not the least of the work's attributes for the genealogist are the epitaphs, biographical sketches, and various lists of colonial New Jerseyans that are sprinkled throughout the volume shedding light on origins, families, and careers. 544 pp., illus., paper. (revised ed., 1868), repr. 1995. [CC9037] $38.50

- NJ-Colonial History Book ID: 4895 Dept: NJ General Index to the Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State. First Series, in Ten Volumes by Frederick W. Ricord A very scarce work in its original form, this index to the first ten volumes of New Jersey Archives is the key to the earliest records of colonial New Jersey. Printed under the direction of the distinguished New Jersey genealogists William Nelson and William S. Stryker, the index contains references to about 7,500 individuals and to hundreds of special subjects relating to the founding and settlement of colonial New Jersey. This hard to find index volume places thousands of obscure references at our fingertips. 198 pp., (1888), repr. Balto., 1994, $22.50, #4895.
- NJ-Biographical Index Book ID: 5415 Dept: NJ New Jersey Biographical Index. Covering some 100,000 biographies and associated portraits in 237 New Jersey cyclopedias, histories, yearbooks, periodicals, and other collective biographical sources published through 1980. by Donald Arleigh Sinclair The 100,000 biographies recorded by the author, were extracted from no fewer than 2,000 volumes scattered among collective sources, not single-volume biographies. This fact alone establishes this book as the key reference work for New Jersey biography. It hardly needs to be said that the author's book will prove to be an invaluable tool for genealogies given the obvious connection between biography and family history, as well as the fact that a number of the compiler's 237 sources contain not only biographies but genealogical sketches. The subject of each entry in the Index is identified by his full name and his years of birth and death. Follwing the subject's name, his biography is cited in abbreviated form, the publication in which it appears, with volume and page numbers, designated by code which is displayed with the list of sources at the front of the book. 7 x 10, 859 pp., Balto., 1994, $60.00, #5415.
- NJ-Probate Records, 1663-1900 Book ID: 4040 Dept: MAIN New Jersey Index of Wills, Inventories, Etc. In the Office of the Secretary of State Prior to 1901. With a New Foreword Kenn Stryker-Rodda This monumental work indexes the New Jersey wills and probate records from 1663 through 1900. It contains more than 185,000 entries, arranged alphabetically under the name of the testator and interstate for each of the twenty-one present-day counties of New Jersey, with the number of the will, year of probate, and references to papers and records connected therewith. Also included at the back of the third volume are indexes to unrecorded wills and New Jersey prerogative wills. This work supersedes the two volumes printed in Trenton in 1901 under the general title of Index of Wills, Office of Secretary of State, State of New Jersey. All of the wills indexed in our reprint volumes are now in the Bureau of Archives and History in the New Jersey State Library in Trenton, and hence these indexes serve as a valuable guide to further information. Our publication is a reprint of the very scarce limited edition of 1912-13, as published by the State of New Jersey, and it includes a Foreward by the late Dr. Stryker-Rodder, distinguished genealogist and one-time president of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey. This set is necessary for any library wishing to hava a basic tool of genealogical research in New Jersey-David C. Epperson Descendants of that small band of 10,000 inhabitants of 17th century New Netherland today number in the millions, and it is therefore not at all unusual for researchers to find that they have one or more ancestral lines that go back to that remote Dutch settlement in New York and New Jersey. The purpose of this book is to show the researcher how to trace a 17th-century New Netherland ancestor back to his place of origin in Europe. Using a few simple techniques the researcher can successfully trace his New Netherland ancestry all on his own. Step by step, the author guides you through the maze of extant records-passenger lists, marriage registers, early court records, and church records-pausing along the way to explain Dutch naming practices, the importance of glossaries, dictionaries, and word lists, and the significance of gazetteers and maps. The text includes many examples of research from her own experience, each example providing a practical and informative lesson. 176 pages, illus., cloth, 1993, $20, 1685

- English Origin of Am. Colonist Book ID: 4060 Dept: ENG English Origins of American Colonists, From the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record One of the main objectives in American genealogy is to identify and immigrant's place of origin and parentage. This pursuit has been so important that thousands of pages of abstracts and transcriptions have been published in American periodicals and learned journals over the years. Among the most important of these periodicals is the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, which, between the years 1903 and 1916, published four lenghty series of abstracted English probate records and depositions, now collected in this work. These abstracts constitute some of the most valuable articles on the English origins of American colonists ever published. In order of appearance here, they are (1) "Clues from English Archives Contributory to American Genealogy," by J. Henry Lea and J.R. Hutchinson; (2) "New York Gleanings in England," by Lothrop Withington; (3) "Genealogical Notes from the High Court of Admiralty Examinations," by J.R. Hutchinson; and (4) "A Digest of Essex Wills with Particular Reference to Names of Importance in the American Colonies," by William Gilbert. For the researcher's convenience, all four articles appear here in their entirety with an index of nearly 10,000 names. 287 pp., indexed, Balto., 1992, $28.50, #4060.

Hunter's Ration Lists, 1710-1714; Lists of Palatines in 1709 (the London Lists); Palatines remaining and newly arrived in New York from the 1710 colonial census; names of Palatine children apprenticed by Gov. This important historical study deals with the background of German immigration, especially that of the Palatines, the causes, migration patterns, the leading figures in the movement, and the disposition of the immigrants. Much of the book deals with the redemptioners, those who bound themselves to service as payment for the trip to America. It covers the types of bond servants and evaluates their role in the development of the German settlements, with accounts of their rise, progress, and place in American Society. 328 pp., illus., indexed. (From the Pa.-Germ. Soc. Proc. & Addr., 1900), repr. Balto. 1988. [GP1470] $21.50
- TRUE AND AUTHENTIC REGISTER OF PERSONS WHO IN 1709 JOURNEYED FROM GERMANY TO AMERICA. Ulrich Simmendinger. The Simmendinger Register, as this work is called, consists of an alphabetical list of approximately 500 Palatine families who were settled in or near the Mohawk Valley of New York in the year 1717. These families were the survivors of the great Palatine migration from the Rhineland in 1709--a migration that took them first to England and then, in 1710, under the patronage of Queen Anne, to America. The author himself participated in this migration and, upon his return to Germany in 1717, he published this little pamphlet as a kind of message from the colony overseas to friends and relatives back home in Germany. An authoritative register of pioneer Palatine families and early settlers of the Mohawk Valley. 20 pp., wrappers. (1934), repr. Balto., 1991. [GP5380] $4.00

- GENEALOGIES OF NEW JERSEY FAMILIES From the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey. In Two Volumes. As one of the original colonies, New Jersey is considered the ancestral home of millions of Americans living today. This present work, a joint project of the Society and the Genealogical Publishing Company, acknowledges the pressing need for comprehensive, scholarly works on New Jersey families, and it therefore brings together all of the compiled material (genealogies, biographies, etc.) and Bible records published in the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, the Society's celebrated periodical, from its first issue in 1925 through the end of Volume 65. Selected by the Society's Board of Trustees, the contents reflect the entire genealogical output of the Magazine, including Charles Carroll Gardner's famous but incomplete series "A Genealogical Dictionary of New Jersey." Under the direction of the Board, GPC assembled the various articles into two massive volumes, each numbering over 1,000 pages! Finally, GPC produced the name indexes containing over 70,000 names! The fruit of these labors, without exaggeration, is the most comprehensive and well-researched body of compiled New Jersey genealogy ever printed in one place. (For a complete list of the main families covered in these volumes, please contact the publisher.)

- NEW JERSEY BIOGRAPHICAL INDEX Covering some 100,000 biographies and associated portraits in 237 New Jersey cyclopedias, histories, yearbooks, periodicals, and other collective biographical sources published through 1980. Donald Arleigh Sinclair. A massive work--forty years in the making--there's never been a reference book like this for the state of New Jersey. The 100,000 biographies recorded by Mr. Sinclair, were extracted from no fewer than 2,000 volumes scattered among collective sources, not single-volume biographies. This fact alone establishes this book as the key reference work for New Jersey biography. It hardly needs to be said that Mr. Sinclair's book will prove to be an invaluable tool for genealogists given the obvious connection between biography and family history, as well as the fact that a number of the compiler's 237 sources contain not only biographies but genealogical sketches. The subject of each entry in the Index is identified by his full name and his years of birth and death. Following the subject's name, his biography is cited in abbreviated form, the publication in which it appears, with volume and page numbers, designated by a code which is displayed with the list of sources at the front of the book. 7" x 10". 859 pp. Balto., 1993. [GP5415] $60.00
- GENERAL INDEX TO THE DOCUMENTS RELATING TO THE COLONIAL HISTORY OF THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY,. First Series, in Ten Volumes. Frederick W. Ricord. Printed under the direction of the distinguished New Jersey genealogists William Nelson and William S. Stryker (among others), the index contains references to about 7,500 individuals and to hundreds of special subjects relating to the founding and settlement of colonial New Jersey. This hard to find index volume places thousands of obscure references at our fingertips. 198 pp. (1888), repr. Balto., 1994. [GP4895] $22.50.

The marriages are arranged by the names of both brides and grooms. Also provided are abstracts of Quaker certificates of removal, which enable genealogists to trace Quaker ancestors from one monthly meeting to another. "A major genealogical achievement, and will probably never be superseded." - The New York Genealogical & Biographical Record. Now in its third printing, this classic two volume set is a mainstay of all New York Germanic research, as well as much of New Jersey's! In the decade since winning the prestigious Jacobus Award the author has spoken before many societies and conferences, and is widely known and admired for his work on German immigrants to colonial America. Hank Jones' massive two volumes fully document the account of all 847 Palatine families who came to colonial New York from Germany in 1710. The volumes trace the American descendants of many of them down to the American Revolution. Also included is the German ancestry, often back into the 17th century, for over 500 of the 847 families! Much of the German research was done by the late Carla Mittelstaedt-Kubaseck, working from in the original records in Germany which have never been microfilmed. Any student of the great Germanic migrations needs this large and meticulously compiled two-volume set.

- "Ancestral Roots of Sixty Colonists Who Came to New England between 1623-1650", Frederick Lewis Weis.
This book has had numerous editions and each with corrections. I don't know what is the current edition. Mine is the 5th, published by the Genealogical Publishing Co., 1985. The layout of the book is such that you must study it carefully because you have to jump around alot...but it is fun. I bought a copy and it is marked up with highlighter, different lines, different colors...only way to keep it straight.Above: http://www.firstct.com/fv/CT.html

Dear Mr. Harris, The Special Collections and University Archives section of the Alexander Library at Rutgers houses the Charles Carroll Gardner collection. It consists of a series of about 60 volumes devoted to pre-Revolutionary New Jersey people. The arrangement is alphabetical by surname. The contents are brief pieces of information on individuals. The sources are the New Jersey Archives series and many county records, town records, and church records. The second part of the collection is made up of a large group of cards devoted to individuals and arranged by surname. All refer to people just in Essex, Union, and Morris Counties. The time range is from the colonial era to mid-19th century. The Gardner collection is on-site and available to researchers during our operating hours. If you have any questions about this collection or any of our genealogical or historical holdings, please contact me via e-mail. Edward Skipworth
From: David Condit
The Gardner collection at the Alexander Library at Rutgers University is focused specifically on Essex County NJ and is quite detailed. The collection includes probably 100,000 3x5 cards (minimum of 36 file drawers) of references to individuals in Essex cty and Newark in particular along with in excess of 100 notebooks on families and individuals. Lots of notes, references, and even some speculation on many individuals. I spent 8 hours in the library and didn't finish the Condit family, much less any of the connections to the family. I am definitely going back when I get a chance.

As one of the original colonies, New Jersey is considered the ancestral home of millions of Americans living today. This present work, a joint project of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey and the Genealogical Publishing Company, acknowledges the pressing need for comprehensive, scholarly works on New Jersey families, and it therefore brings together all of the compiled material (genealogies, biographies, etc.) and Bible records published in the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, the Society's celebrated periodical, from its first issue in 1925 through the end of Volume 65.
Selected by the Society's Board of Trustees, the contents reflect the entire genealogical output of the Magazine, including Charles Carroll Gardner's famous but incomplete series, "A Genealogical Dictionary of New Jersey." Under the direction of the Board, GPC assembled the various articles into two massive volumes, each numbering over 1,000 pages! Finally, GPC produced the name indexes containing over 70,000 names! The fruit of these labors, without exaggeration, is the most comprehensive and well- researched body of compiled New Jersey genealogy ever printed in one place.
4056. Vol. I. 1,139 pp., indexed. $75.00
4057. Vol. II. 1,087 pp., indexed. $75.00

5415. NEW JERSEY BIOGRAPHICAL INDEX Covering some 100,000 biographies and associated portraits in 237 New Jersey cyclopedias, histories, yearbooks, periodicals, and other collective biographical sources published through 1980. Compiled by Donald Arleigh Sinclair. 7" x 10". 859 pp. Balto., 1993. $60.00
- 4895. NEW JERSEY, General Index to the Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of. First Series, in Ten Volumes. By Frederick W. Ricord. 198 pp. (1888), repr. Balto., 1994. $22.50
A very scarce work in its original form, this index to the first ten volumes of New Jersey Archives is the key to the earliest records of colonial New Jersey. Printed under the direction of the distinguished New Jersey genealogists William Nelson and William S. Stryker (among others), the index contains references to about 7,500 individuals and to hundreds of special subjects relating to the founding and settlement of colonial New Jersey. This hard to find index volume places thousands of obscure references at our fingertips.Below: http://www.higginsonbooks.com/netonm.htm

FAMILIES OF BERGEN COUNTY, NEW JERSEY, EXCEPTED FROM HISTORY OF BERGEN COUNTY, NEW JERSEY, 1630-1923 Frances A. Westervelt. In 1923 Westervelt published her three-volume History of Bergen County, New Jersey, 1630-1923. The second half of that work, commencing in the middle of the second volume and occupying all of the third and consisting of 1,200 biographical and genealogical sketches of Bergen County families, has been reprinted here under the title Families of Bergen County, New Jersey. For the most part the essays concern Bergen County men and, to a lesser extent, women, who were born during the final quarter of the 19th century. In most cases we also are told of the person's place and date of birth, the names and birthplaces of his/her parents, the name of the spouse with the date of marriage, the names, birthdates, and places of birth of children, and sometimes even more. 742 pp. illus. index (1923) repr. 1996. - 4010. NEW JERSEY MARRIAGE RECORDS 1665-1800, by William Nelson. 804 pp., cloth, $40.00. Perhaps the most frequently consulted book in New Jersey genealogy. It was originally published in 1900 as Vol. XXII of the Archives of the State of New Jersey and it remains today the principal authority on early New Jersey marriages. Indeed, its claim to supremacy has never seriously been challenged. All told it contains approximately 30,000 entries (15,000 marriages), giving place of residence and date of marriage. For the sake of simplicity the marriages are arranged in two alphabets, male and female. The bulk of the work derives from marriage bonds and licenses formerly located in the Secretary of State's office but now on file in the New Jersey State Library. The remainder---perhaps an additional 5,000 entries....derives from the marriage records of the following churches and counties: Hackensack Reformed (Dutch) Church, 1695-1800; Schraalenburgh Reformed (Dutch) Church, 1724-1801; Bergen County, 1795-1800; Bergen Reformed (Dutch) Church, 1664-1801; Essex County, 1795-1801; Lyons Farms Baptist Church, 1795-1800; Second River Reformed (Dutch) Church, 1730-1774, 1794-1800; Christ Church New Brunswick, 1758-1778; New Brunswick Reformed (Dutch) Church 1794-1799; Middlesex County, 1795-1800; Piscataway Seventh Day Baptist Church, 1745-1776; Scotch Plains Baptist Church, 1758-1761; and Chesterfield (Burlington County) Friends' Monthly Meeting 1686-1800.
- 4058. GENEALOGIES OF NEW JERSEY FAMILIES From the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey. In Two Volumes. 1,139 & 1,087 pp., each volume indexed. Balto., 1996. The set: $150.00 As one of the original colonies, New Jersey is considered the ancestral home of millions of Americans living today. The fruit of these labors, without exaggeration, is the most comprehensive and well-researched body of compiled New Jersey genealogy ever printed in one place. 4056. Vol. I. 1,139 pp., indexed. $75.00 4057. Vol. II. 1,087 pp., indexed. Available only as part of the complete set. (For a complete list of the main families covered in these volumes, please contact the publisher.)
- 5415. $60.00 A massive work--forty years in the making--there's never been a reference book like this for the state of New Jersey.

[CC4895] $22.50
- THE VAN DYKE FAMILY
For those of us interested in the early history of the Dutch in New Jersey, the book The Van Dyke Family of New Jersey: A Glimpse of the Dutch Settlement of New Jersey, by Paul Van Dyke is more than a genealogy of his family. The book carefully explains the events that were happening at the time his ancestors lived. It starts with the golden age of Dutch exploration and helps us understand the motivation of the Dutch East India and the Dutch West India Companies. Mr. Van Dyke guides us through the early difficulties between the Dutch and English. He tells of the founding of New Utrecht, the family's move to New Jersey and includes more information down to the ninth generation of the family in America.
The book is based on primary sources, has excellent pictures, and the text and appendices are filled with copies of original records. Statistically, it is 8 ½ by 11 paperback, 246 pages, illustrations, maps, bibliography, appendices and indices at the cost of $23.50, plus $4 shipping and handling, (U.S. funds) Order # V052 from Heritage Books, 1540 E. Pointer Ridge Pl., Bowie, MD 20716. The book is a delight and reads more like a historical novel.
- ANCESTRAL RECORDS AND PORTRAITS
A compilation from the archives of Chapter I
The National Society, Colonial Dames XVII Century was founded in 1915 by Miss Florence Taney. Its object is "To aid in the preservation of the records and of the historic sites of our country; to foster interest in historical colonial research; to aid in the education of the youth of our country; to commemorate the noble and historic deeds of our ancestors, the founders of our great Republic; to maintain zealously those high principles of virtue, courage and patriotism which led to the independence of the Colonies and the foundation and establishment of the United States of America; to maintain a Library of Heraldry and preserve the lineage and Coats-of-Arms of our Armorial ancestors and to develop a library specializing in the seventeenth century American Colonial data." In keeping with some of these goals, Chapter One of the Colonial Dames of America, compiled a two-volume book that introduces us to some of those early Americans, entitled Ancestral Records and Portraits. In the 800-plus pages of the book you will find the names of many early Americans. Although some families have dates, positions, intermarriages, descriptions of arms, crests and mottoes included, we found no Mabilles of any spelling. We did find Schuylers, van Schaick and Du Bois mentioned. Any American woman of good moral character, eighteen years of age or over, is eligible for membership, provided she has been invited by the Society and is the lineal descendant of an ancestor who lived or served prior to 1701 in one of the Original Colonies in the geographic area of the present United States of America. Some of the areas of service by your ancestor, that might qualify you are: Colonial Governor, civil and church officials, signer of the Mayflower Compact; landowner, Freeman, planter or founder of any school. This book is a reprint (1910), 8835 pp, 2 vols, illustrated, indexed, paper, $57 plus $4 shipping and handling (U.S. funds). You can order it from Heritage Books; their number, C545.
