At this time, only submitting members of Descendants of Edward Ball of New Jersey group may download files, containing the Big gEDcom, from this page. The files are provided in three different formats. The first is a plain text version of the GEDCOM. It can be downloaded by any type of computer, and imported into one's genealogy program. This file was exported using the GEDCOM version 4.0 format (with abbreviated tags and ANSI character set). If you have an IBM type computer, I would recommend downloading the second or third file instead. They are self-extracting, Pkzip compressed, versions of the first file. The benefits are a faster transfer, and errors that may occasionally occur during a download will be discovered when un-compressing. If using DOS, to un-compress this file, at the DOS prompt type:BIGEDThe file will then expand into a GEDCOM called"BIGED.GED". In Windows, one can double-click on the file, and it will un-compress automatically. The GEDCOM is created by using Family Tree Maker for Windows 3.4. This is the software program that the current "keeper" of the Big gEDcom uses. It is an excellent genealogy program, it is also a terrible genealogy program; such is life. Certain limitations this software has on source, note, event handling & GEDCOM importing force a few compromises. The source/references list is stored inside the Big gEDcom in the 'NOTE' section of a 'dummy' individual called "!REFERENCES!". The source event #'s correspond to the numbers in this section.
The member's user-name, and password, will be required before the downloading begins. By downloading a file from this section, the user agrees to use the data for personal use only, not to re-distribute the file, and to abide by the copyright protection each submitter to this project has on their data. Please see The Copyright Page for full details.
Please email The Big gEDcom keeper if you have problems downloading.
