RA Tompkins (in Ref A)., assigns Micah Tomkins as a son of Ralph
Tompkins. The earliest American genealogical records refers to his
removal with his wife, Mary, in the summer of 1639, overland from
Wethersfield CT to the site of the present town of Milford CT. This
branch of the family continue to spell their name as Tomkins.

Wethersfield was settled about 1634 by immigrants from Watertown MA and
other towns in Eastern Massachusetts. As the list of settlers in
Wethersfield from 1635 to 1660 published in the history of Hartford
County CT, does not contain the name of Micah Tomkins, it is probable
that he remained at Wethersfield but a short time.

Milford, New Haven County, CT was purchased 28 Aug 1639 from the Indian
chief, Ausautawae. The first Milford town meeting, held in the town of
New Haven, on 20 Nov 1639, granted franchise as free planters (list of
freemen of Milford) to Micah Tomkins, among others. (Ref B.) Micah and
Mary had all their children at Milford CT. As one of the first settlers,
he received a 2 acre plot #15 in the original subdivision and which in
1646 was opposite the Town House (Ref. B.) in the center of town. He
also received his share of land in 1643 and 1649 as a result of further
subdivisions of town land.

On 12 Dec 1643, Micah & Mary were admitted to the church and their living
children baptized several days later. On 2 Mar 1659/60, a Michael
Tompkine signs as a witness on an Indian grant from Chief Tawtanimo to
Richard Baldwin at the latter's house in Milford. (Ref C.)

As a result of Cromwell's Rebellion in 1660, two regicides fled from
England to America. These individuals had outstanding warrents for their
arrest and moved frequently throughout New England to escape arrest.
Micah hid these two individuals for a period of two years in his house on
West Water Street (now the site of the High School) until Jul 1664 when
they fled to MA. (Ref B.)

In 1666, Micah removed, with a large group of friends and some of his
family, to New Jersey. In Jul 1667, they bought a large tract of land
from the Indians on the Passaic River where now is the city of Newark NJ.
(Ref D.)

His will was probated on 4 Dec 1690 at Newark NJ. (Ref A.) Bolton in his
History of Westchester, states that Micah was of the same family as John
Tompkins of Concord (1640).
