Subject: Re: Kay's BALL GEDCOM

Hi - The other source I have is a family history passed down thru the
last 3 generations or so. Where this came I haven't been able to
document too clearly except that the story is signed "Maude Lloyd
Highberger, daughter of John Lloyd, son of Thomas, Dated March 1937, at
North Platte, Nebr." Two versions of this story exist, one says that
"John, the oldest son, settled in Camptown (Camden?), NJ and married
Rebecca Ball". Another version says "Joe married a Miss Rebecca Ball in
Compton (Camden?) NJ". In both stories John and Joe are brothers. Also
in both stories there is a relationship stated with Mary Ball (one as
cousin, one as sister) mother of George Washington. I have pretty well
proved this relationship was not so by contacting the Mary Ball Society
(or whatever it is called) and they say there was never a Rebecca Ball
married to a Loyd in their line.

I realize I may be claiming the wrong family by using Vance's chart. So
far I have kind of claimed them as mine by entering them in the
computer. Vance was the only source I have ever seen that listed Rebecca
and that she married John Loyd. By the way, Loyd is the way my family
spells it's name, although my uncle and various others have used Lloyd
with 2 lls in given names. Supposedly a predecessor by the name of
Thomas Lloyd came from Wales in 1684 and at that time he changed the
spelling of the name.

There is just enough correct information in these two family stories that
I can't help but believe much is true but who knows. I agree, there is
alot of misinformation and variations of dates between the versions, what
Vance has recorded and what your family information shows. That's why I
am following along on this Edward Ball computer group, hoping to find the
truth.

At one point in studying these family histories I concluded there was a
missing generation. However, since one of the later Thomas Loyds had 23
children by 2 wives I decided to accept the large span of years for one
of his predecessors until I learned otherwise. There may have been
another man with two wives in succession who provided children in his
older years for all I know. This line has been a real stumper for me.
It wasn't until last summer I could find out my great grandparents birth
and death dates as they weren't really recorded anywhere I could find. I
found their shared grave stone. I have not even proven they were ever
married.

My hope has been to study Rebecca Ball's line to unlock the Loyd line. I
may or may not be on the right track!

Anyway, this is something of the logic I've been following. I had hopes
to be in NJ in October, hopefully in Camden/Compton/Camptown. Of course
the latter two cities don't seem to exist so I'll settle for Camden in
hopes I can find something on the marriage there. Unfortunately the trip
may not materialize and I may have to hire a researcher for help. If you
can shed any light I would greatly appreciate your help, even if it's to
disprove any connection to Edward Ball's line. It's been fun learning
about him, at any rate!

Thanks again, Kay

Ref#167:
About 1765 he settled in Camden NY and married Rebecca. Cousin to Mary
Ball the mother of George Washington? They later moved to Virginia and
had their family.
Monona Co History, 1890 indicates son's name was Thomas and he was born
in VA. Camptown, or Camden, NJ is about 60 miles from Philadelphia.
According to a chart of "Descendants to the Third Generation of Edward
Ball"

The children listed could be those of Thomas Lloyd and Miss Clark. On a
trip to the Medford, OR Public Library in March 1995 found "The Abridged
Compendium of American Genealogy, First Families of America" ed. by
Frederick A. Virkus, Marquis & Co, 1925. These volumes have the same
information, word for word, that various family histories have in them
which have been passed down to various family members. These histories
tie John Loyd and Rebecca Ball to Thomas Lloyd of PA. There may or may
not have any family connection. On page 692 there is also lissted a John
Lloyd, of Welsh family, who came from Ireland and settled in NY. In 1770
he married Susan Chadwick.

According to information sent by Joseph L Druse, 667 Virginia, E Lansing
MI 48823, John Lloyd was of Bloomfield, NJ. There is a John Loyd listed
in the 1800 census of Rensselaer Co, NY which is near Duanesburg,
Schenectady Co. There is also a John Loyd listed in the 1810 census of
Chenango Co, NY Schenectady Co was formed from Albany co. in 1809.
